Sustainability

At The Wind Down Mist, we believe restful sleep shouldn’t come at the expense of the planet. That’s why sustainability is woven into everything we do—from our packaging choices to the way we give back.

We know that small actions add up, and together, we can make a real difference.

A. Eco-Friendly Packaging: Designed for a Greener Future

We spent a lot of time thinking about our packaging because we didn’t want to create something that just looks good—we wanted it to do good too.

Why We Chose Metal Bottles

Most pillow mists come in plastic, which often ends up in landfills or floating in our oceans. We wanted better.

That’s why we chose recyclable metal bottles. Unlike plastic, metal can be recycled endlessly without losing quality. It’s a small swap that makes a big impact.

Here’s why it matters:

    • Less Waste – No single-use plastic here.
    • Lower Carbon Footprint – Recycling metal uses up to 95% less energy than making new materials.
    • Stronger, Longer-Lasting Bottles – No leaks, no cracks, just a bottle that looks good and does good.

And if you don’t want to recycle it right away? These bottles are perfect for upcycling—turn them into a vase, a pen holder, or anything else your creativity dreams up.

How to Recycle Your Metal Bottle

  1. Rinse it out – A quick clean makes recycling more effective.
  2. Remove the spray nozzle – If it’s plastic, check if it can be recycled separately.
  3. Drop it in your collectable bin – Most New Zealand councils accept metal bottles. If you’re not sure, check your local recycling guide.

B. Sustainable Paper Packaging

We know packaging waste is a huge problem, so we designed ours to be easy to recycle or compost—no unnecessary plastic, no complicated materials.

Here’s why it’s better:

  • Less Waste in Landfills – Paper breaks down naturally, unlike plastic.
  • Saves Trees – Recycling paper helps reduce deforestation.
  • Gets a Second Life – Your old box could turn into a notebook, a cereal box, or even another package.

How to Recycle Paper Packaging

  1. Flatten the box – Saves space and makes recycling easier.
  2. Remove excess tape or labels – A little extra effort goes a long way.
  3. Compost it if you can – Uncoated paper can be composted at home.

Not sure what your local recycling rules are? Auckland Council’s recycling guide and New Zealand’s national recycling information have got you covered.

Giving Back: 1% for the Planet

Sustainability isn’t just about reducing waste—it’s about creating a better future. That’s why 1% of our profits go directly to environmental projects that make an impact.

Every time you buy The Wind Down Mist, you’re helping one of the following causes:

  • Plant Trees – Reforesting areas hit by deforestation.
  • Clean Up Oceans – Removing plastic and waste to protect marine life.
  • Protect Wildlife – Supporting projects that safeguard endangered species.

Since moving to New Zealand in 2017, I’ve been inspired by the country’s breathtaking landscapes and deep commitment to conservation. It’s this ethos that shaped The Wind Down Mist—a business that gives back, not just to people, but to the planet.

So, every time you spritz your pillow, you’re doing more than creating a peaceful bedtime ritual—you’re helping build a greener, cleaner world.

Because better sleep and a healthier planet should always go hand in hand.
